Frequently Asked Questions

πŸ€” What is a hackathon?

A hackathon is a short event where people come together to build something cool. Usually following a theme, participants work in teams to create a project that they can present to a panel of judges and compete for prizes. Hackathons are a great way to learn new skills, meet new people, and have fun!

πŸ§‘β€πŸ’» Who can register for HackPNW?

Any high school student can register for HackPNW! We welcome students of all skill levels, so whether you're a seasoned veteran or a complete beginner, we'd love to have you join us!

πŸŽ’ What should I bring?

We recommend bringing a laptop, chargers, with everything you need installed (IDEs, toolchains, etc.), and most of all bring a positive mindset and good energy, and you'll have a great time! We're unable to provide hardware, so you must bring your own.

🌎 How big is HackPNW?

HackPNW has successfully hosted two events so far with over 250 unique attendees leading the way as the pacific northwest's premier high school hackathon. We're expecting over 250 attendees this HackPNW Spring 2024!

🀝 How many people are in a team?

Teams should be 2-4 people. After you register, you'll be able to create or join a team.

😰 What if I don't have a team?

No worries! You won't be the only one, and in fact hackathons are great for meeting people you wouldn't have otherwise met. You can find a team in our Discord Server or during the event.

πŸš— Is there parking available?

There is some limited street parking near Northeastern University (street parking rates apply), and there are larger garages nearby if you need to park.

πŸŒ™ Is HackPNW overnight?

HackPNW occurs over 2 days, however it is not an overnight event. You will have to leave at a certain time on Saturday and return the next day. Please see the schedule for more details.

⛏️️ What programming languages/tools/whatever can I use?

You're free to use whatever you want! You can make an app, website, game, robot or even just a design, really anything goes. We recommend using whatever you and your team are most comfortable with. As long as it can produce something cool by the end, you're good to go!

πŸ—οΈ Do you have examples of past projects?

Yes! Take a look at our Devpost for HackPNW Winter 2023 where the theme was "Automate an aspect of your every day life" and the Devpost for Devpost for HackPNW Summer 2023 where the theme was "A product that addresses an environmental issue in your community."

πŸ›£οΈ Can travel be reimbursed?

Hack Club are currently offering travel reimbursements for those that need to travel to in-person high school hackathons. This program is not facilitated by HackPNW. Please see Hack Club's Gas program website for more details.
